Facebook Will End On March 15???

PALO ALTO, CA –Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March. Managing the site has become too stressful.

“Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”

Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.

“After March 15th the whole website shuts down,” said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business.”

Zuckerberg said that the decision to shut down Facebook was difficult, but that he does not think people will be upset.

Motorcycle Taxi in Phnom Penh

A common sight around the city, motorcycle taxis or motodups are widespread and fastest form of transportation. These motodups are easily located at almost every corner in town. They cost about US$6-$8 per day and tend to be higher at night, with multiple passengers.

Wat Phnom

Serenely located on a grassy hilltop, Wat Phnom is the main temple and legendary founding place of Phnom Penh. According to folklore, in the 14th century, a woman by the name of Penh uncovered sacred Buddhist relics in the nearby river and purposefully placed the statues on the hill. This created a temple or pagoda to house the precious relics. The building of a “Phnom” meaning “hill” and a “wat” meaning small temple, allegorically resulted in what is known as Wat Phnom today. Over time, the surrounding area was acknowledged after the hill “Phnom” and its lady creator “Penh.”

Presently, Wat Phnom is a site of activities with a faithful stream of visitors to the shrines and fortune tellers located on top of the hill. At the foot lies an assemblage of street vendors and visitors where activities such as elephant rides are available. Also significant is Wat Phnom’s containment of the remains of King Ponhea Yat (1405 - 1467) who moved the Khmer capital from Angkor to Phnom Penh in the early 15th century. Additionally, the altar of Lady Penh is believed to be a special blessing to women.

Russian Market located south of Mao Tse Toung Boulevard, after browsing through various wares at the Central Market. This market is frequented by Russians and Russian goods can be found in abundance in this place during the 1980s, thus the name. Tourists head to this famous shopping area to buy novelty items, souvenir pieces, apparel, footwear, bags, wooden products, pottery, jewelry and many others. This is also a food section where one can sit down to enjoy some tasty snacks and refreshments. There are also vendors that boast of selling original clothing items that are export overruns. Brands that are commonly sold here are GAP, Columbia, and Calvin Klein. Another item that are sold at a bargain here are backpackers that are perfect for backpacking tourists in the city. To give a clearer picture, one vendor sells two sturdy and nice looking backpacks for only US$ 15.

Angkor Wat Temple is A Khmer Wonder

There are few places anywhere on earth to match the splendor of Angkor Wat that is one of the largest monuments to religion ever built and is truly one the wonders of the world.

Believed to have been constructed as a temple and mausoleum for King Suryavarman II at the peak of the Khmer empire in the first half of the 12th century, Angkor Wat is probably the best-preserved of the Angkorean temples. As with other Angkorean temples and walled cities such as Angkor Thom, the central theme of Khmer architecture revolved around the idea of the temple-mountain. By the time building on Angkor Wat was begun early in the 12th century, this had been elaborated to a central tower surrounded by four smaller towers. The central monument represents the mythical Mount Meru, the holy mountain at the centre of the universe, which was home to the Hindu god Vishnu. The five towers symbolise Mount Meru’s five peaks.

It is difficult to express in words the enormous scale of Angkor Wat, but it can be explained in part by a look at the dimensions of the complex. The temple is surrounded by a moat which makes the one around the Tower of London, built at roughly the same time, look like nothing more than a garden trench. At 190 metres wide and forming a rectangle measuring 1.5 km by 1.3 km, it is hard to imagine any attacking force overwhelming the defences. But the moat was more than just a defensive bulwark, in line with the temple’s Hindu origins it represented the oceans of the world. A rectangular wall measuring 1025 metres by 800 metres borders the inner edge of the moat.

There is a gate in each side of the wall, but unusually for the mainly Hindu-influenced Angkorian temples, the main entrance faces west. This entrance is a richly decorated portico, 235 m wide with three gates. However, the temple’s greatest sculptural treasure is its 2 km-long bas-reliefs around the walls of the outer gallery and the hundred figures of devatas and apsaras. This intricately carved gallery tells stories of the god Vishnu and of Suryavarman II’s successes on the battlefield. The whole complex covers 81 hectares.

The Phnom Penh Post, Cambodia's oldest English-language newspaper, is looking for five young journalists for its Leadership in Journalism scholarship programme.

The programme, being launched with the support of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, will enable outstanding new graduates to spend 12 months working in the newsroom of The Phnom Penh Post under the guidance of experienced editors and reporters.

Scholarship winners will be paired off with Cambodian journalists at the Post, where they will be fully immersed in the dual language newspapers produced by Post Media Ltd. A senior journalism instructor will oversee formal work, while senior staff from The Phnom Penh Post will offer real world newsroom experience.

The project’s unifying goal is to expose the editors of tomorrow to the full rigours of publishing a daily newspaper. The scholarships are designed purely for those who have or are committing themselves to a career in media.

An undergraduate degree in journalism is preferred. Scholarship winners will receive free housing and a small monthly stipend.

The scholarship programme is expected to begin at the end of November.
