Tuol Tampoung or Russian Market : From colorful scarves to banana leaves filled with sticky rice and bananas, Psar Tuol Tom Pong, also commonly known as the Russian Market, is a bustling marketplace not to be missed. Situated in the southern part of Phnom Penh, the market’s name was coined after its rising interest amongst Russian expatriates during the 1980s. Carrying a wide variety of items such as local snacks, traditional handicraft, gems, hand-woven Chinese and Cambodian silk and antique furniture, shoppers looking to find an exotic gift or souvenir will be delighted by the choice and intricacy of work. Adding to the list are silverware, books and maps, handbags, shoes and clothing, custom-made jewelry, suits and many other interesting finds. It is no wonder tourists, expatriates and local Cambodians tend to agree the Russian Market is indeed a savvy shopper’s paradise on earth.
Russian Market located south of Mao Tse Toung Boulevard, after browsing through various wares at the Central Market. This market is frequented by Russians and Russian goods can be found in abundance in this place during the 1980s, thus the name. Tourists head to this famous shopping area to buy novelty items, souvenir pieces, apparel, footwear, bags, wooden products, pottery, jewelry and many others. This is also a food section where one can sit down to enjoy some tasty snacks and refreshments. There are also vendors that boast of selling original clothing items that are export overruns. Brands that are commonly sold here are GAP, Columbia, and Calvin Klein. Another item that are sold at a bargain here are backpackers that are perfect for backpacking tourists in the city. To give a clearer picture, one vendor sells two sturdy and nice looking backpacks for only US$ 15.
Russian Market 11:00-1:00pm – Shopping around the famous Russian market in Phnom Penh. Guests can find souvenirs to bring home. This market is also actually a great place to buy name-brand clothes produced in Cambodia. They have real overstocks and seconds from major brands such as Calvin Klein and Levi’s for ridiculously low prices.
